Bahnhof Cottbus

Cottbus Hauptbahnhof (Lower Sorbian: Chóśebuz głowne dwórnišćo) is a railway station in the German town of Cottbus. The station opened in 1866, with a train connection to Berlin. This connection was extended to Görlitz a year later. Construction of the station building began in 1870, and it was built between the tracks. In the following years, the regional rail network was further expanded, and Cottbus gained a connection to Großenhain. However, this train arrived at a different station, and the connection was discontinued after a few years. This left the train station with the connection to Berlin as the only station once again. In the following decade, the station was further expanded with freight handling on the north side, and a tunnel was built under the tracks to reach the platforms. Expansion plans continued, including a new station building in 1927, but this could not be built during the subsequent economic crisis. At the end of World War II, in February 1945, the station was destroyed during an Allied air raid. A temporary station building was therefore built after the war. Construction of a new station building did not begin until the 1970s, and it finally opened in 1978. In 1989, the tracks to Lübbenau and Finsterwalde were electrified. A year later, the tracks to Senftenberg and Guben followed. This fully connected Cottbus to Germany's modern rail network. A rail link to Frankfurt (Oder) was destroyed by open-cast lignite mining in the 1990s and had to be removed. The line to Guben was rerouted in 2002 for the same reason but remained open. Until 2000, the station was the only one serving Cottbus, so the addition of "Hauptbahnhof" (main station) was unnecessary. Since then, however, the stations Cottbus-Sandow[, Cottbus-Merzdorf, and Cottbus-Willmersdorf Nord have been opened on the rerouted railway line to Guben, making it necessary to clarify the station's meaning. During the renovations for the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show), the name on the exterior of the station building was changed to Cottbus Hauptbahnhof. However, the official name remains Bahnhof Cottbus (Cottbus Station).
