ČD Muzeum Lužná u Rakovníka
The museum is located in the village of Lužná u Rakovníka in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. It is housed in the former locomotive depot (“výtopna”) of the Buštěhradské dráhy railway company, built originally in 1871. The depot function remained in use for steam traction until the late 1970s and was finally closed for regular railway depot service in 1996. Once the depot was decommissioned in 1996, a volunteer-driven exhibition activity began in 1997. Then, in 1999 the museum was formally established by České dráhy (Czech Railways). The museum’s primary role is to preserve, exhibit and operate historic railway vehicles — steam locomotives, diesel and electric locomotives, motor railcars, passenger and freight carriages, as well as narrow-gauge industrial railway vehicles. It is also an active centre for “nostalgic” railway operations: for example, special historic trains departing the museum, weekend steam locomotive programs, educational displays of railway technology and interactive experiences for visitors. Because of its historic location, the museum offers both indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces: the preserved depot buildings plus turntables, servicing facilities, narrow gauge track for visitor rides, etc. In 2018 the number of visitors was 32,355. Being part of the railway company’s heritage and “nostalgia” division, the museum benefits from operational support of the railway infrastructure and historic rolling stock.
