SS Côte d'Azur
The SS Côte d'Azur was a flagship vessel of the Dover-Calais route, introduced to meet the growing demand for fast and comfortable crossings. Built in 1929, the SS Côte d'Azur was owned and operated by the Chemin de Fer du Nord as part of their fleet. The ship was designed with modern Art Deco, reflecting the period's emphasis on speed and elegance. The ferry was one of the more advanced ships of its time, with a focus on reducing crossing times and providing a stable, reliable service. The Dover-Calais route in the 1930s was a crucial transport link between Britain and France, This period saw enhanced collaboration between the Southern Railway (which operated Britain's Dover port and rail connections) and the Chemin de Fer du Nord (the French railway company managing Calais' port and rail links). Passengers could purchase through-tickets that covered train journeys from London (via Southern Railway) and connections to Paris (via Chemin de Fer du Nord) in a single transaction. The companies jointly marketed the Dover-Calais route as the fastest and most comfortable way to travel between the capitals of Britain and France. Services such as the Golden Arrow (Flèche d’Or), a luxurious train-ferry-train service launched in 1929, became iconic. The British train (Golden Arrow) connected with the French Flèche d’Or, allowing passengers a seamless and opulent journey from London to Paris.
