Litra MY is a Danish diesel-electric locomotive, which was produced in 59 copies for the Danish State Railways (DSB) by Swedish NOHAB from 1954 to 1965. The locomotive was for many years the backbone of DSB's passenger and freight traffic, until they were gradually taken out of service in the early 1990s. Some locomotives were scrapped, while others were sold to Danish private railways and operators and to various Swedish and German companies. The locomotive is of the NOHAB AA16 type, which was produced in similar versions for Norway, Hungary, Belgium and Luxembourg. The locomotives were built with the American F7 as a model and equipped with a 16-cylinder engine from General Motors and three-axle bogies with two driving axles and a running axle. In contrast to the American locomotives, which only had a driver's cab at one end, the European ones had one at both ends. The first Danish order was for four locomotives and a spare engine for testing. The testing of the locomotives, which were delivered in 1954, went well and was followed by orders for a further 40 locomotives, which were delivered until 1958. In 1954-1965, a further 15 locomotives were delivered, bringing the total number to 59. In addition, 45 litra MX were delivered in 1960-1962, which was a lighter version, which could therefore operate in places where the litra MY was too heavy.
