Dr. W. Hupkesbrug

The Dr. W. Hupkesbrug is a truss bridge over the Waal at Rhine-km 933.5 in the Gelderland municipalities of West Betuwe and Zaltbommel in the Utrecht-'s-Hertogenbosch section. This railway bridge is named after Willem Hupkes, former director of the  Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways) and resistance fighter. The bridge is made of iron and steel and was opened in 1869. The bridge has 10 pillars on a length of 863 metres and is 15 metres wide. The three spans over the summer bed of the river are 125 metres long. The eight spans in the winter bed are all on the Waardenburg side and measure 61 metres. The pillars are made of masonry with a stone cladding. In the first year, trains from the north only ran as far as Hedel; only after completion of the Hedelse railway bridge over the Maas was 's-Hertogenbosch directly accessible by train from Utrecht. While the 19th century was mainly dominated by the development and construction of railways, the 20th century saw the gradual construction of motorways. To the west of the railway bridge, the Bommelse Bridge was built in 1933, also a truss bridge, over which traffic from the Rijksweg 2 passed. This was replaced in 1996 by the more modern Martinus Nijhoff Bridge.
