Fortunato Depero

Fortunato Depero (1892-1960) was an Italian Futurist painter, writer, sculptor and graphic artist. Fortunato Depero's  first encounter with Futurism took place in 1913, when, during a trip to Florence, he came across a copy of the newspaper Lacerba, in which he read an article Futurism.  Depero took this as an inspiration and in 1914 moved to Rome, where he met another Futurist, Giacomo Balla. Together with him, in 1915 he wrote the manifesto Ricostruzione futurista dell’universo (“Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe”), which built on and expanded on the ideas of other Futurists. In the same year, he also worked on stage design and costume designs for ballet performances. In 1925, he represented the Futurists at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris (International Exhibition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts). Depero moved to New York in 1928, where he achieved success as a costume and graphic designer. He returned to Italy in 1930. Despite the decline of the Futurist movement in the 1930s and 1940s, Depero continued his artistic activity.  One of the projects he was involved in at the time was the magazine Dinamo, which he founded and directed. Due to problems with the European authorities after the end of World War II, Depero decided to return to New York in 1947, but he did not meet with a warm welcome there either. Despite this, he achieved several successes. Fortunato Depero later lived out his life in Rovereto, Italy, where he returned again and opened the Galleria Museo Depero in 1959.  He died at the age of 68. Many of his works are now in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto ("Mart") in Italy, which now includes the only Italian museum dedicated to Futurism, the Casa d'Arte Futurista Depero.
