Gare du Quartier Léopold (Gare de Bruxelles-Luxembourg)

Gare de Bruxelles-Luxembourg was originally called Gare du Quartier Léopold, as it was meant to service the recently developed Leopold Quarter The station was built between 1854 and 1855.  Although it was the third station built in Brussels, it is the oldest one which is still in operation, and one of the oldest in the world for the same matter. The  railway station was designed as a transit station rather than a terminal one. During the 19th century, the station was divided into sections to differentiate the three different classes of travel. The station was extended in 1899 and 1921 with single storey pavilions, which were then amalgamated in 1934, when the façade was standardised. The station, is nowadays underground, and the former main building has been incorporated into the European Parliament Complex as an information office.
