Glasgow Museum of Transport / Riverside Museum
The Glasgow Museum of Transport was established in 1964: The museum was first located in the former Coplawhill Tram Depot in Pollokshields, a building dating back to 1894. This depot had originally served as a central workshop for Glasgow's tramway system. The museum was created to showcase Glasgow's extensive transport heritage, reflecting the city's significant role in shipbuilding, locomotive construction, and transport innovation. In 1988, the Glasgow Museum of Transport relocated to Kelvin Hall in the West End of Glasgow. The new location allowed for more extensive displays and greater public access. During its time at Kelvin Hall, the museum gained international recognition and became one of Scotland's most-visited attractions. It displayed a variety of transportation artifacts, including trains and locomotives, representing Glasgow's contributions to railway engineering. In 2011, the Glasgow Museum of Transport moved to the purpose-built Riverside Museum on the banks of the River Clyde, designed by architect Zaha Hadid. The new location brought the museum back to the heart of Glasgow's historic shipbuilding and industrial area. The Riverside Museum has become a world-class attraction, displaying over 3,000 objects, including: vintage cars, bicycles, motorbikes, trams, and locomotives.
