Lyonel Feininger

Lyonel Feininger /1871-1956), American-German painter. Lyonel Feininger settled in Germany in 1887, where he studied painting and from the 1890s earned a living as a caricaturist. A preference for Gothic architectural forms and a romantic attitude characterized Lyonel Feininger's painting from the beginning, and his encounter with Robert Delaunay and Parisian Cubism in 1911 had a decisive influence on his artistic development. In poetic abstractions of medieval buildings, landscapes, the sea and ships, he created an airy and transparent pattern of shapes and colors with fine color tones, for example a series of pictures of the church at Gelmeroda. From 1913, Feininger exhibited with Der Blaue Reiter, and in 1924, together with Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Alexej von Jawlensky, he founded the group Die Blaue Vier. A few years later, graphics formed a significant part of Lyonal Feininger's work. In 1919, he became head of the graphic workshops at the Bauhaus School, where he taught until 1933. A few years later, he returned to the United States due to Nazi persecution. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1955.
