This painting was identified as a self-portrait by the artist. Duchamp's primary concern in this painting is the depiction of two movements; that of the train in which there is a young man smoking, and that of the lurching figure itselforld, including by his imaginative stagings of the great surrealist exhibitions, just as he secretly worked on the installation Etant donnés ('The Given') for years; this work can be found, like several of his works, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art in the USA.
