Etat-Exactitude
‘Etat-Exactitude’ from 1929/1932 is Pierre Fix-Masseau’s (1904-1995) most celebrated work. The painting depicts a boldly foreshortened image of a train which has just pulled into a station – the title and the precision of the image suggesting that it is exactly on time. The painting is typical of the period with strong lines, sharp angles and dark block. The poster represents one of the most striking successes of the Art Deco poster. The geometry of the composition aims to magnify the power of the locomotive and to show the efficiency of rail transport provided by the French railway company Chemins de Fer de l'Etat. The railways company turned the painting into a poster to be used in a promotional campaign. A copy is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This poster has been reprinted several times.
