Pit von Frihling

Pit von Frihling 1919- 2011). German painter, graphic artist and artisan. After apprenticeship as butcher he served in World War II. 1945-48 he studied at the Hamburg Landeskunstschule. In 1957 he studied again, this time at the Hamburg academy . In 1958 he established his own art school in Hamburg and on the Dutch island Terschelling.
In his youth, von Frihling created pictures in conventional oil painting, and his first pencil sketches, such as self-portraits, have also been preserved from this period. Pit von Frihling's main work is entirely devoted to the North German and Dutch landscape, but he was less concerned with creating an image of a specific landscape. He devoted himself more to the typical geological nature of his subject and incorporated light and its creative power into the composition.  As a rule, humans do not appear as subjects in the picture, "there is no need for a human representation when everything is intended for humans". He was born and died in Hamburg.
