Spionageabwehr
This image is an illustration from 1917 titled "Spionageabwehr", which translates to "Counter-espionage" in English. Publ. by Kunstverlagsanstalt Gerhard Stalling, Oldenburg in Gr. (Künstler-Postkartereihe "Immer Fachmann". Karte nr. 11 "Spionageabwehr"). Unknown artist. It was likely created as a satirical or propagandistic piece during World War I. The scene takes place inside a train compartment, where a German soldier in uniform is seen playfully lifting his coat over himself and a young nurse or maid, possibly to speak in secret or flirt. The elderly woman sitting opposite them looks suspicious and disapproving. The title, "Spionageabwehr", suggests a humorous take on the idea of secrecy or counterintelligence. It might imply that the soldier thinks he is being discreet but is actually drawing attention.
