Bo Bonfils
Bo Bonfils (1941-2019) was a Danish artist. Bo Bonfils was educated at the advertising department of Københavns Kunsthåndværkerskole (the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts) 1958-1961. As a designer he was self-taught. From 1960 Bo Bonfils ran his own business, which he established in parallel with his work as an illustrator for the newspaper Politiken. Bo Bonfils designed his first stamps in 1981. They were four stamps with motifs from flight through the ages. Later, many more stamps were created by his hand – including Dansk Landbrugsmuseum (the Danish Agricultural Museum) in 1989, locomotives in 1991, sailing ships in 1993 and trams in 1994. Many will recognize Bo Bonfils' line from much more than stamps. Bo Bonfils first became nationally known in the 1970s for a series of matchboxes for the supermarket Irma with motifs of ships, trams and cars. He is also known for his posters for the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Tivoli, Louisiana and De danske Statsbaner, DSB (Danish State Railways). Internationally he is also known for his posters for, among others, Daimler-Benz. Represented in 2004 with his 1990 ID award-winning Georg Jensen stainless steel cutlery at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City. Among his later assignments were the design of wristwatches for the design company Georg Jensen and cutlery for Scandinavian Airline System.
