Cassandre
Adolphe Cassandre, pseudonym of Adolphe Mouron ( 1901-1968), was a French painter, poster artist and typeface designer. Cassandre was born in the Russian Empire to French parents and moved to Paris as a young man. There he was educated at the École des Beaux-Arts and at the Académie Julian. Inspired by Cubism and Surrealism, he made a name for himself and won first prize in 1925 at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. Here he broke radically with traditional poster art. Cassandre started his own advertising agency which served a wide variety of clients during the 1930s. He is perhaps best known for his posters for travel and railway companies. His was also working for the Dubonnet Wine Company. His posters are memorable for their innovative graphic solutions. At the beginning of World War II, Cassandre served in the French army until the fall of France. With his company in decline, he supported himself by creating sets and costumes for the theater. After the war he worked for French fashion houses. In 1963, he created the well-known logo for Yves Saint-Laurent. During his last years, Cassandre suffered from depression which led him to commit suicide in Paris in 1968.
