Chemins de Fer de Provence

Chemins de Fer de Provence (CP) is a French regional railway company that operates the narrow gauge (1000 mm) railway line between Nice and Digne-les-Bains in Provence. The company operates this railway only. The railway starts at Gare de Nice, at Rue Alfred Binet 4 in Nice. The route is 151 km long and takes about 3 hours. The railway reaches an altitude of 1,000 metres above sea level in some places and therefore ran so slowly with steam locomotives that people could get off the train and collect pine cones. The railway was therefore called the Pine Cone Railway (French: Le Train des Pignes). It is now operated by rail buses. There have been several small railways from Nice to the hinterland over time, but this is the only remaining route. It is mainly used by tourists and runs through valleys and gorges along the Var River in a scenic area. The railway's terminus in Nice was until 1991 at Gare du Sud and since then to the present site. In Digne there was also a former railway line to Grenoble (standard gauge) operated by French States Railways, Société nationale des chemins de fer française (SNCF). The SNCF had its own station building opposite the CP station. The former station of the CP is no longer used. The narrow gauge track and the ticket service are moved to the former SNCF station building.
