Comité National des Colonies et des Vacances
The Comité National des Colonies et des Vacances (National Committee for Colonies and Holidays) was a French organization created in the early 20th century to promote vacation colonies (often referred to as "holiday camps" or "vacances de colonies") for children and young people, particularly those from disadvantaged or working-class backgrounds. The organization aimed to provide opportunities for children to experience nature, relaxation, and cultural enrichment during their school breaks.
The Comité National des Colonies et des Vacances worked with both the government and private organizations to fund and organize these vacation colonies. It collaborated with local authorities and other social organizations to make these camps accessible to as many children as possible, regardless of their socioeconomic status. The organization was also linked to the broader context of French colonialism in that it sometimes arranged for children from French colonies to participate in these camps, aiming to provide them with experiences in the metropole (mainland France) that aligned with the ideals of French culture and civilization at the time.
