Gare de Vence

Gare de Vence (Vence railway station) was part of an old French railway line that linked Nice to Grasse and eventually Draguignan and Meyrargues. Known as la Ligne Central-Var it was part of the "Sud-France" network. The line was officially inaugurated in 1888, having been built between 1860 and 1888, with work carried out in stages due to challenging terrain, including steep gradients, rivers, and rocky landscapes. The line suffered damage during the World War II, particularly due to Allied bombings targeting railway infrastructure in Provence. The Ligne Central-Var was officially closed in stages, with the last section ceasing operations in 1950.  Many remnants of it still remain in the area and are easy to find. Just a few kilometers from Vence you can still see the pillars of the Loup viaduct which spanned the Loup River. It was destroyed during the war in 1944 and all that remains today are a few of the supporting pillars. Many of the old train stations from the line are still standing, but the Vence train station no longer exists.
