Bahnhof Güstrow

Bahnhof Güstrow (Güstrow railway station) went into operation in 1850. Güstrow is located in in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in North-Eastern Germany. The first railway in Mecklenburg was the Berlin-Hamburg Railway, which went into operation in 1846 and was built by a Prussian company. In 1850 Güstrow was connected to the railway net and the station building was opened in 1855. Several railway lines were connected to Güstrow and after 1887 the station had become one of the most important railway junctions in Mecklenburg. The most important east-west and the most important north-south connection in Mecklenburg crossed here. The station was rebuilt in 1895, and the passenger station received two new island platforms. At the end of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century, several larger companies settled in the area around the station and received corresponding rail connections.  In the first years after Second World War almost all traffic towards Rostock was concentrated on Güstrow station, with the majority of trains having to change direction in the station. With the construction of larger industrial facilities in the north of the state Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR), the importance of the station for freight traffic continued to grow. Güstrow station remained one of the most important stations in the region for both freight and passenger traffic. After the fall of the DDR, the importance of the station for freight traffic declined rapidly. After the turn of the millennium, there were further changes to the track plan, the northern platform track was dismantled. The reception building and a number of other buildings in the station area are listed buildings.
