Hans Böttcher

Hans Böttcher (1897-1986) was a German painter, graphic artist and illustrator. Hans Böttcher was self-taught, but also took painting lessons. From 1919, Böttcher worked as a freelance painter, graphic artist and illustrator in Berlin. From 1925 to 1933, he was a member of the
Reichsverbands bildender Künstler und des Vereins bildender Künstler in Berlin. During this time, he also took part in numerous exhibitions, among others such as the Anti-Kriegs-Museum and the Arbeiterkunstverein. After the Nazis seized power in 1933, he was banned from practicing his profession.  In 1945, Böttcher was one of the first artists in Berlin to try to rebuild the city's destroyed cultural life, where he joined the Berlin Kulturkollektiv. Böttcher's work was strongly influenced by expressionist painting until World War II. He painted colorful landscapes, still lifes and religious themes. After 1945, Böttcher oriented himself towards different styles, such as cubism, informal or abstract painting and surrealism.
