Militärhandelsorganisation

The
Militärhandelsorganisation (Military Trade Organization) MHO was established in the late 1950s, during the consolidation of the German Democratic Republic's (DDR's) military and state structures, following the establishment of the Nationale Volksarmee (National People's Army) in 1956. It was modeled after similar military trade organizations in other socialist states. The purpose was to supply military personnel with consumer goods that were otherwise scarce or unavailable in the civilian economy and to offer discounted products to improve the quality of life for military members. By offering material incentives, the state sought to bind military personnel more closely to the regime. MHO operated retail stores and canteens exclusively for military personnel (conscripts, officers, and civilian employees within the military) and their families. The outlets provided goods such as clothing, electronics, food, and luxury items that were often difficult to acquire in the general DDR market. Some products were imported from Western countries, making them highly desirable. The MHO also distributed military-specific goods, such as uniforms and equipment for off-duty use. By the 1980s, the DDR’s economy was struggling, and the MHO faced increasing difficulties in procuring high-quality goods, especially imported items. The declining standard of living across the DDR eroded the appeal of MHO services. With the reunification of Germany in 1990, the MHO ceased to exist.
