Peter Muzeniek

Peter Muzeniek (1941 - ) born in Łódź, then Litzmannstadt, is a German graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist. Peter Muzeniek lived with his parents, who came from Latvia, in Schwerin, Mecklenburg, from 1945. He completed secondary school there until 1959. He then did an apprenticeship as a lettering and poster painter at DEWAG Schwerin until 1961. After his military service, he moved to Berlin. From 1965 to 1970 he studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. Since then he has worked freelance as a graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist in Berlin. Muzeniek was a member of Verbands Bildender Künstler der DDR (the Association of Visual Artists of the German Democratic Republic, DDR) until 1990. In 1976, the satirical magazine Eulenspiegel published a work by Peter Muzeniek for the first time, and he has been a permanent contributor there since 1980. With his biting, gripping caricatures of current events, he gave countless satirical articles a controversial edge and developed an unmistakable caricature style. Peter Muzeniek has also illustrated more than 70 books to date, works of world literature (Anton Chekhov, Victor Hugo, Jules Verne, etc.) as well as a number of children's books. In the DDR, he worked for the Eulenspiegel publishing house, Altberliner Verlag Lucie Groszer, Buchclub 65, Insel-Verlag, Kinderbuchverlag, Militärverlag, Neues Leben and Rütten & Loening, and after German reunification for the Frieling publishing house, Berlin, and the Osnaton publishing house, Brühl, among others. In addition to numerous solo exhibitions, Muzeniek has taken part in national and international exhibitions and biennials.
