Willem Laurens Bouwmeester


Willem Laurens Bouwmeester (1874 - 1939) was a Dutch historian and painter. Bouwmeester  studied at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Amsterdam and obtained his doctorate there in 1903He was deputy headmaster at the gymnasium of Doetinchem and was seen as a pioneer in the historical geography of the Dutch sandy areas. In addition to his professional activities, Bouwmeester was a painter. He painted and drew mainly landscapes. He was inspired in his work by railways and trains in the landscape. Commissioned by the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen), he produced a painting for the head office in Utrecht. Fifteen of his paintings and thirteen drawings are in the collection of the Dutch Railway Museum in Utrecht.
