Willy Colberg

Willy Colberg (1906-1986) was a German painter and graphic artist. Colberg decided to become an artist and attended artists school between 1926 and 1932. Colberg was a political person throughout his life. At a young age he was involved with the Naturfreunde  and the Youngsozialisten.. Artistically he was connected to the Assoziation revolutionärer bildender Künstler, known as ASSO. .During the Nazi era he was considered close to the KPD. He emigrated in 1934, but was deported back to Germany in 1939 by English police. After he was drafted to the German navy, where he later joined local partisans in Italy. After the end of the Second World War, Colberg returned to Hamburg. He worked as an advertising and press illustrator. Since Colberg tried to approach the Socialist Realism of the DDR (German Democratic Republic) in his free work, he was largely excluded from public exhibitions and commissions. He was often invited to the DDR. Until the 1970s, Colberg created etchings and woodcuts that dealt with war and rearmament, politically motivated illustrations, caricatures, posters and banners. Colberg constantly sought the optimal relationship between content and form in his paintings and therefore often reworked them.
