Schwebebahn Wuppertal

The Schwebebahn Wuppertal (Wuppertal Suspension Railway) is one of the oldest monorail systems in the world and a famous landmark of the city of Wuppertal, Germany. Construction began in 1898 and took about three years. By 1901, the railway was completed.  The line originally spanned 13.3 kilometers, traveling from Oberbarmen in the east to Vohwinkel in the west, with most of the track running directly above the Wupper River. The Schwebebahn attracted considerable interest due to its futuristic design and efficient service. The railway was seen as a modern marvel and became popular for both residents and visitors.  Throughout the 20th century, the Schwebebahn faced various challenges, from wartime damage during World War II to the demands of an expanding urban population. Repairs were made after the war, and the system resumed regular operation. By the 1970s, however, the Schwebebahn required extensive modernization to keep up with increasing ridership and safety standards.Today, the Schwebebahn is more than just a means of public transport. It has become an iconic symbol of Wuppertal and a major tourist attraction.
